Firstly, gather the required materials: an oil filter, four quarts of 10W40 full synthetic oil (Eddie recommends Liquid Moly), coolant for the overflow reservoir, a 17mm socket, oil filter wrench, and tools for chain adjustment—a 32mm socket, a breaker bar, and 12mm wrenches.
Before changing the oil, warm up the bike to about 105°F. After reaching the temperature, locate the oil filter and place an absorbent pad underneath to catch any spills. Remove the oil filter and drain the oil, ensuring all old oil is out. Apply new oil on the rubber O-ring of the filter, then install and tighten it by hand. Next, drain the oil pan using a 17mm socket, allowing the oil to fully empty.
For the coolant top-off, identify the coolant overflow reservoir. Fill the coolant to the appropriate level using Eddie's method of a hose attached to a coolant bottle cap. Ensure you don’t overfill to allow room for expansion.
To adjust the chain, loosen the axle nut with a 32mm socket and use the 12mm wrenches to evenly adjust both sides. Check the chain tension manually or with a chain alignment tool to ensure proper alignment.
Lastly, verify the throttle play and adjust if necessary. Check the tire pressure, ensuring 36 PSI for the front and 42 PSI for the rear tires.
Completing this service correctly will take about two hours and can save you dealership costs while maintaining your bike's performance and warranty.
